Four suspects were fatally wounded and two others arrested after a shootout with police in Mofolo, Soweto, on Wednesday, the Hawks said.

The incident unfolded after intelligence was received about a planned armed robbery at a local business. The information, gathered by the Modus Operandi Centre, was acted upon by a joint team comprising the Hawks Tactical Operations Management Section, Badboyz Security and the Gauteng Highway Patrol.

Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale said the team identified the suspects’ vehicles near the targeted premises.

“Upon realisation that police were observing, the suspects split as they fled in their two vehicles and police gave chase,” said Mogale.

A high-speed chase ensued, followed by a shootout between the suspects and law enforcement officers.

“In the aftermath, four suspects were fatally wounded while two were arrested,” Mogale said.

The arrested suspects are expected to face charges including business robbery, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms.

Police have launched a manhunt for a seventh suspect who fled on foot during the chase.
