A baby was among five people killed when a driver made an illegal U-turn to fill up at a fuel station he had passed.

A bakkie and light vehicle carrying six passengers collided when they tried to avoid the U-turning Renault.

Five people died at the scene and two were rushed to hospital.

The accident happened on the N1 near Mookgopong, in Limpopo on Wednesday afternoon. The driver who allegedly caused the accident was apparently intoxicated, according to tests done on him at the scene, said authorities.

Tshifhiwa Dali, spokesperson for the provincial department, said the driver has been arrested.

“The bakkie travelling behind him collided with an oncoming vehicle. A baby was killed in the crash. The Renault driver has been arrested. Drugs were also found in his vehicle,” he said.

Limpopo transport and community safety MEC Violet Mathye urged all road users to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of other drivers. She called for motorists to prioritise safety when travelling during the Easter weekend.
