South Africa is shooting for the stars on Friday evening in an unusual Guinness world record attempt.

The Astronomical Society of Southern Africa is trying to break the world record for the largest crowd gathered on Earth to look at the stars.

It wants 2 000 people to descend on Durban's Botanic Gardens to look stargaze together from 7:30pm to 7:40pm.

eThekwini Municipality has encouraged its residents to "make history" by being part of the event.

"Those attending are encouraged to bring along a pair of binoculars to be included in the count. Telescopes‚ spotting scopes‚ cameras with telephoto lenses‚ opera glasses and even toy binoculars will be accepted‚" said municipal spokesman Mandla Nsele.

It’ll also be a picnic by starlight: the public is encouraged to bring food and drink‚ picnic blankets and camp chairs.

Nsele said a donation of R10 a person would go to the Durban Botanic Trust and the Astronomical Society of South Africa.
