A 35-year-old has been sentenced to seven years in prison after police found explosives in a taxi in which he was travelling near Modimolle, Limpopo.

Guezane Matseque was convicted in the Modimolle regional court on Tuesday for illegal possession of explosives and for being in the country unlawfully.

Police spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale said the arrest followed a stop-and-search operation by the Waterberg flying squad on June 1 2025 near Kranskop Plaza. Officers searched a taxi and discovered a brown bag containing explosive materials.

“Inside the bag were 500 detonator caps, four reels of detonator cord and four V6 explosives. Other passengers identified Matseque as the owner of the bag, leading to his arrest at the scene,” said Mogale.

The case was handed to the Hawks serious organised crime investigation unit in Polokwane, whose investigation led to his conviction.

Mogale said the case forms part of ongoing efforts to curb serious crimes involving explosives, including cash-in-transit heists.

Matseque was sentenced an additional 12 months for contravening immigration laws. The sentences will run concurrently.
