eNCA has come under fire after the channel removed a reporter's footage from a bulletin because she was wearing a doek.

Nontobeko Sibisi, an arts and entertainment reporter at the broadcaster, had put together Africa Day footage that focused on African cross border music collaborations.

But the story was pulled off air because, according to Sibisi, she was wearing a doek.

  •

A leaked email which was sent from Sibisi to her colleagues has since gone viral, with #RespekTheDoek, #DoekForNonto and #DoekTheNewsroom trending on Twitter with over 17 000 comments on the issue.

While debate on the issue continues to rage, eNCA editor-in-chief Anton Harber has confirmed that a review of what reporters may wear on-air is currently underway.

"eNCA has a fairly conventional policy on what presenters and reporters may wear on-air, and it is not very different from those of most other television channels. But there are concerns among our staff that this policy needs to be reviewed and updated."

  •

Harber added that the broadcaster welcomes the debate on the issue. "We have initiated an internal process to ensure our policy is in line with our corporate and national values, and that it embraces the diversity of our staff and audience. We look forward to a rich debate about how we do this, and are confident that it will enhance our news product."
