Fashion designer Ouma Tema has honoured Ndlunkulu, Her Royal Highness Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela, with a new dress named after her, available in the Plus-Fab range for voluptuous women.

Ouma Tema did a Q&A session with TshisaLIVE on her relationship with the AmaZulu queen and the inspiration behind the dress.

Please give some details on the design and fabric choices.

“Elegance in Blue Mesh Dress” is a stunning choice for plus-size women who adore fashion and comfort. This royal blue dress features puffy, short mesh sleeves for a touch of sophistication, while the rest of the dress is crafted from high quality for a perfect blend of style and comfort. The pièce de résistance is the brocade silk breastplate forming a striking “T” on the centre front. Elevate your style with this unique and classy outfit from Plus-Fab.

How did you meet Ndlunkulu and when?

I met Ndlunkulu last year on the eve of her birthday in Gauteng. She has been buying clothes from our store in Durban. We loved seeing her in our clothes and wanted to meet her so she can enjoy more custom services we offer.

What inspired the dress?

We designed and made this dress for her in June for an event powered by her KaMaskolo Foundation. The event was about encouraging women from all walks of life to live their truth. After we posted on social media, a lot of our clients kept asking that we make for them too. After many requests, we decided to add it to our collection so all our clients look and feel like the queens they are.

How is your relationship with Ndlunkulu?

I consider her a dear sister and friend. Most importantly, a trusted designer for her special occasions.

What's important for you with every garment you make?

At the core of our business, we want plus-size women to look and feel confident. Our design process and fabric choice are guided by that core principle of looking and feeling confident.

For how many years have you been making clothes for plus size-men and women?

It is 12 years of designing for women and just under a year designing for men.

What keeps you motivated and continuing to do what you love?

Seeing our clients looking forward to stepping out with so much confidence because, finally, they have an outfit that not only fits but accentuates their curves.
