The roofless iteration of BMW’s M4 has landed in time for summer – and Christmas.
With its top fixed, it retains the sleek silhouette that defines the M4 Coupe. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the pair apart. The electric metal folding roof sheds in 20 seconds and can be lowered while on the go, at speeds of up to 18km/h. According to BMW, a noise-absorbing headliner makes it around two decibels quieter than the outgoing model. Boot capacity is 220 litres with the roof open or 370 litres with it up.
Like its siblings, smart weight-saving measures were employed. For example, the bonnet and front side panels are aluminium and carbon fibre reinforced plastics have been used liberally throughout the car. Power remains as it does in the M3 and M4 Coupe (317kW and 550Nm), propelling the car to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds (those do the dash in 4.1 seconds).
While it will undoubtedly ruin your hairdo if you attempt to match this claimed sprint time, BMW says the M4 Convertible is still capable of cruising when the mood takes you – albeit in a “Rapid but relaxed style” according to their marketing folks.
It is the most expensive model in the M3 and M4 line-up. The Convertible will set you back R1,185,000 (manual) and R1,233,500 for the M DCT model. This is about R142,000 more than the Coupe and R193,000 more than the M3.
