A prisoner at Leeuwkop Prison, north of Johannesburg, was killed in a fight at the weekend, Gauteng correctional services said on Monday.

"It happened Sunday morning," said Ofentse Morwane, regional spokesman for correctional services in Gauteng.

"We have launched an immediate investigation to establish what led to this unfortunate incident."

The dead man was identified as Andre Jordaan, who was serving a 25-year sentence for murder, rape and assault. Morwane could not immediately confirm whether he was the same person who killed seven-year-old Sheldean Human in Pretoria in 2008.

The man who attacked Jordaan was serving 15 years for murder and robbery. The Sowetan reported that the two had argued over a Manchester United and Liverpool football match.
