Five people were killed when a drunk driver hit them on Monday in Ledig village outside Sun City, the North West department of human settlements, public safety and liason said.

"The five who are said to be between the ages of 21 and 30, were all certified dead on the scene," said spokesman Simon Lesolang Mmope.

The 35-year-old driver was arrested after the 4am accident. He was expected to appear in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of culpable homicide and drunken driving.

This brought the death toll on roads in the North West to 16 since the beginning of the Easter long weekend. On Sunday, Mmope said 11 people had died on the province's roads.
