Two home affairs officials were arrested for theft in Pretoria, the Hawks said.

"The suspects were part of the mobile unit tasked with assisting school pupils to get IDs," said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

According to the Hawks the officials pocketed the R140 paid for identity documents, but did not process the applications.

Home affairs then received complaints, looked on its system, and discovered the applicants' information was not there.

"The matter was brought to us in June by the department and we started investigating. More arrests are expected," said Ramaloko.

They two were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday on theft charges.
