Chuck Norris might cut through a hot knife with butter, but only Spongebob and Braai Boy can grill meat under water.

A joke mocking the legendary actor's fabled martial skills sparked an original idea in Gareth Daniell - who will on Saturday attempt to set a world record for braaiing under water.

Daniell, famously known as Braai Boy, said this was another attempt to take braaiing to another frontier.

"I cannot think of a place where I have not braaied and this was just right up my alley of weird ways of doing it."

He will make the world-record attempt a month after Braai Day founder Jan Scannell's first-ever underwater braai, in Houtbaai.

Daniell, from Pretoria, however said his braai will be different.

Scannell used a water-tight glass case with gloves sealed in holes through its sides when braaiing. Daniell's braai setup is open at the bottom, like an upside-down aquarium.

All of his equipment will be completely submerged.

"We will be under water for between two and four hours," said Daniell.

A video of the braai will be sent to Guinness World Records in the next two weeks.

After months of practice he will this weekend put his culinary skills to the test.

Ensuring that the meat stayed dry was the easiest part, he said.

"It was keeping the fire going and keeping the area free of smoke that proved tricky."

He will be joined under water by friend and professional diver Dawie "Duik" Schlebusch.

The braai will take place in a swimming pool. Compressed air will be supplied from seven 12-litre cylinders. The pressure of the air from the cylinders will keep the water out of the glass case and feed the fire.

The wood, coal, fire lighters and meat are carried through the water in Ziplock bags.

Daniell will in two weeks join eight teammates in the US to take part in two international braaiing competitions.

The submarine braai will be at Ridgeback Village, Centurion, near Pretoria, from 2pm to 6pm.
