About 200kg of crystal methamphetamine (tik) with a value of over R59 million was seized at Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport on Tuesday, the SA Revenue Service customs team said.

Two separate consignments from Benin declared as containing prop shafts were identified for further checks, spokeswoman Marika Muller said.

Narcotics detector dogs reacted positively to the cargo.

"On further investigation and the use of an angle grinder, a sugar-like substance was found concealed inside the prop shafts."

This was the biggest seizure of crystal methamphetamine at the airport, Muller said.

The drugs had been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Attempted drug shipments from Benin have increased.
