Cape Town police have confiscated illegal firearms that were going to be used at a "memorial service gun salute".

Officers attached to the Western Cape command centre caught wind on Tuesday that firearms would be discharged at a memorial service in Khayelitsha.

Provincial police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi said officers “proceeded to the identified address”.

“Upon arrival ... they accosted a suspicious man carrying a bag.

"The members searched him and in the process confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition. The 30-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Swartbooi.

“The members continued their search and found an additional three 9mm pistols, abandoned close to the identified premises where the memorial service was to be held. The firearms and ammunition were confiscated and handed in as exhibits.”

Swartbooi said the suspect would appear in the Khayelitsha magistrate's court once charged.
