EFF calls on Wits to reverse decision on suspension

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has called on Wits University to reverse its decision to suspend EFF members who allegedly disrupted a Students Representative Council (SRC) election debate. The debate had to be called off when physical altercations erupted and alleged EFF members took to the podium and chanted “No SRC”.In a statement confirming their suspension and the withdrawal of recognition of the party as a society at the university‚ the executive committee of the university’s council said it was “dismayed” to hear about the disruption‚ saying it went against everything that the university stood for.It said that after viewing video footage of the incident and consulting the Electoral Officer and her colleagues‚ the Vice-Chancellor had concluded that there seemed to be reasonable grounds for believing that the disruption of the debate was orchestrated by members of the EFF Society at Wits.In a statement on Saturday‚ the EFF said: “We reject this suspension in light of the fact that it happens conveniently on the eve of the SRC elections which the EFF was set to win.”The EFF charged that it had been informed that “there is no evidence that EFF members in particular were responsible for this incident and that the University did not conduct a thorough investigation into the matter”.“The timing of this suspension and the unfair manner in which it was conducted is worrisome and can only lead us to believe that the decision was politically motivated. If the University felt the electoral process was being disrupted‚ they would have halted all proceedings and conducted a thorough investigation. Instead‚ they hastily targeted our members for suspension‚ while elections are being allowed to continue.“Interestingly‚ the EFF branch at Wits is liberating disadvantaged students from the oppressive and untransformed administration of the University‚ and they were set to uncover corruption at the highest level‚” the party asserted.It stated that it would not “take this lying down” and called on the exco of the university’s council to reverse the “draconian” decision. “We call on them instead to thoroughly investigate the said incident of disruption‚” the EFF said...
