Former Constitutional Court judge Zak Yacoob‚ who has been a vocal critic of President Jacob Zuma‚ told the Save South Africa People's Assembly on Wednesday morning that he is no longer a member of the ruling party. Yacoob urged South Africans to remember the values enshrined in the Constitution‚ saying it was the duty of the nation to hold corrupt leaders to account. He said that it was with a sense of shame that he reported that he is one of the reasons that the Constitution does not have any anti-corruption clauses‚ but that he was turning to the “honest” people of South Africa to show that he was correct in insisting on this exclusion.“The honest people of South Africa will ensure [that corruption] is dealt with.” Yacoob also spoke extensively on the call for Zuma's resignation and the prosecution of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan‚ which was dropped this week. Here are some nuggets from Yacoob's speech:- “Many people say we have a particular view of Pravin Gordhan‚ that when we say ‘hands off Gordhan’ we don't want him to face the law. I will make it quite clear that what we are saying is‚ ‘All dirty hands of Pravin Gordhan’.”The leading figures supporting the Save South Africa protestA who’s who of struggle stalwarts‚ religious leaders‚ businesspeople and civic activists gathered at Pretoria’s St Albans Cathedral under the banner of Save South Africa on Wednesday morning. - “If I had to say now that Jacob Zuma’s hands are clean he would be the first to laugh at me. He knows his hands are dirty.”- “If Zuma resigns tomorrow we have not won our struggle. We have had a small victory and nothing more. Our first objective of course is that Zuma must fall‚ but our president is not only one man … it follows that there is dirt on the hands of the majority of the NEC of the African National Congress.”- “I am no longer an ANC member.” - “We have now realised the idiocy of trusting political parties … Come 2019 we are only going to vote for political parties who deserve it. If none deserve it we will withhold our vote.”- “We need to start by making it clear that the (amandla awethu) is no longer the ANC call. It is now the call of the people of our country. It is our call‚ and we must make sure that the ANC uses this call only when it is entitled to do so‚ otherwise they must stop using our call.” The gathering gave Yacoob a standing ovation when he finished speaking.- addtional reporting by Kingdom Mabuza– TMG Digital..
