Economist Dawie Roodt is being treated in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Pretoria, after being attacked during an attempted robbery at his home late on Thursday.

Roodt, the chief economist at advisory service Efficient Group Ltd., was stabbed in the arm and suffered an injury to the back of his head when four men entered his house east of Pretoria and tied up his wife and daughter, his colleague Francois Stofberg said by phone on Friday.

Roodt is due to undergo a second operation to repair ligaments in his arm, Stofberg said.

The number of attempted murders in South Africa rose by 4.6% in the year through March 2014 and incidences of robbery with aggravating circumstances increased 13%, according to police data.

The murder rate is 6.7 times higher than in the US
